Who is Allstate?
Allstate was founded in 1931 as a division of Sears, Roebuck and Co., originally selling auto insurance through the Sears catalog. It became an independent publicly traded company in 1993. Allstate is the second largest homeowners insurer in the United States, operating through a combination of exclusive agents and independent agents. They have historically positioned themselves as a premium carrier ("You're in Good Hands") but have faced significant regulatory scrutiny and litigation over claims handling practices, particularly following Hurricane Katrina and subsequent major weather events.
Allstate has a significant presence in Texas and is subject to all Texas Department of Insurance regulations. Following Hurricane Harvey, Allstate faced a significant volume of Texas claims and has adjusted their loss control protocols accordingly. They use both in-house adjusters and independent adjusting firms, and have field catastrophe teams that deploy during major weather events.

How to file a Allstate water damage claim — step by step
File immediately — call or use the app
Call 1-800-255-7828 or file through the Allstate app. Document everything before cleanup — the Allstate Digital Locker in their app is designed for home inventory. Call us at the same time — we will begin documentation immediately.
Understand your deductible before proceeding
Texas wind losses may have a separate wind/hail deductible, often 1–2% of dwelling coverage value, which can be significantly higher than your standard deductible. For a $300,000 home, a 2% wind deductible is $6,000. Know this before choosing to file.
Adjuster assignment
Allstate uses both staff adjusters and independent adjusting firms. Independent adjusters are common during high-volume events. Allstate's claims process has historically varied significantly in quality — staff adjusters tend to be more consistent than independents. Having our Xactimate documentation ready before their inspection is the great equalizer.
Good Hands Repair Network — your choice
Allstate may suggest contractors from their Good Hands Repair Network. You are not required to use them. These are preferred vendors with negotiated rates — which may not reflect your specific market or the full scope of IICRC-certified restoration. We work directly with Allstate as an independent contractor.
Review the estimate carefully
Allstate's estimates often miss: secondary moisture damage in wall cavities, matching costs for flooring and paint, contents pack-out costs, and complete drying equipment scope. We review every Allstate estimate line by line and submit supplementals for any missing scope.
Supplement and close
Supplemental claims are submitted with our complete documentation. Allstate typically responds within 10–15 business days. Payment is issued and restoration proceeds.
What their adjusters look for
Allstate's claims handling quality varies more than most large carriers — it depends heavily on which adjuster is assigned. Staff adjusters in their Texas market tend to be experienced and relatively fair. Independent adjusting firms assigned during high-volume events are less consistent. The Good Hands Repair Network was designed to give Allstate more control over restoration scope and cost — their preferred vendors' estimates tend to reflect the network's negotiated pricing rather than current market rates. Our independent Xactimate documentation typically identifies 20–40% more scope than Allstate's initial estimates.
Our experience with Allstate
We have handled hundreds of Allstate claims across Texas and our other markets. Allstate's best quality: they generally acknowledge and respond to claims promptly. Their most common weakness: initial estimates that under-scope secondary damage — particularly moisture that has migrated into wall cavities and subfloor systems. This is the area where professional documentation creates the most value for policyholders.
⚠️ Watch out for with Allstate claims
The Good Hands Repair Network — preferred vendors, but not your only option
Initial estimates that don't include wall cavity or subfloor moisture intrusion
Wind/hail deductibles in Texas — check your declarations page before filing
Allstate's use of "proprietary pricing" in some markets — challenge with Xactimate
Early settlement pressure on total losses or large claims
Adjuster not physically present — remote/virtual estimates consistently miss scope
Allstate water damage — frequently asked questions
Does Allstate cover water damage from a burst pipe?
Yes — sudden and accidental water damage from a burst pipe is covered under standard Allstate HO-3 policies. The pipe repair itself is typically not covered (only the resulting water damage is), but all structural damage caused by the escaping water is covered subject to your deductible.
What is Allstate's Good Hands Repair Network and do I have to use it?
The Good Hands Repair Network is Allstate's preferred contractor program. Participation gives those contractors access to Allstate claim assignments, but the rates and scope are negotiated by Allstate. You are not required to use a Good Hands contractor — you have the legal right to choose any licensed contractor. We work with Allstate as an independent contractor and produce Xactimate estimates that Allstate's systems accept.
Does Allstate cover mold after water damage?
Allstate covers mold remediation when it results from a covered sudden water event. Most Allstate policies include a mold sublimit — check your declarations page. Mold coverage requires that you reported the water event promptly and took reasonable mitigation steps. Long-term moisture that produces mold is generally excluded as gradual damage.
How do I maximize my Allstate water damage settlement?
Three steps: (1) Document everything immediately — photos, video, moisture readings before any cleanup; (2) Hire an IICRC-certified restoration company that uses Xactimate, not a general contractor who gives a rough estimate; (3) Don't accept the first offer without reviewing it line by line. If Allstate's estimate is below what your contractor requires, file a supplemental claim with supporting documentation. We handle this process routinely.
Does Allstate cover water backup from a sewer or drain?
Standard Allstate HO-3 policies do NOT cover water that backs up through sewers, drains, or sump pump failure. This coverage requires a Water Backup Endorsement, which is available as an add-on. If you have a basement, a sump pump, or live in an area with aging sewer infrastructure, this endorsement is highly recommended. Check your declarations page — it will be listed there if you have it.
My Allstate claim was denied — what are my options?
Start by requesting the written denial letter with the specific policy language cited as the basis for denial. Review it carefully — many denials are based on the gradual damage exclusion or a specific endorsement limitation. Common next steps: (1) submit additional documentation challenging the denial basis; (2) request re-inspection with our contractor present; (3) invoke the appraisal clause if it's a dispute over amount; (4) file a complaint with the Texas Department of Insurance; (5) consult a bad faith insurance attorney. Call us — we've successfully challenged Allstate denials through proper documentation.
